Save Big Bird!
"Don't regulate Wall Street, but crack down on Sesame Street." That pretty well sums up the debate between Romney and Obama.
Big Bird...Always lower income...devoted to teaching children ONE OF ROMNEY'S 47% ... HE NEEDS YOU NOW! Well politics always brings some hummer. Who would have thought that Big Bird might turn an election?
After BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in losses thrust on Americans by Wall Street excesses, bringing on the worst recession in 40 years, we go to an iconic symbol. Big Bird, "fire him" is the solution that came out of this debate. One would have hoped that both candidates would acknowledge that a well regulated financial system, with legal checks and balances, is important for stability to reduce abuses and corruption.
The giant banks and Wall Street firms cost American taxpayers more than $400,000,000 (Billion), not to mention the financial impacts on millions of Americans. Romney suggested that we allow business to operate freely, with fewer rules and regulations and to crack down on things such as "Big Bird" instead. Indeed, Sesame Street, a loved program for Children's education and entertainment, gets 17% of its financial support from taxpayers of $400,000,000 (Million) per year.
Wall Street loses $400,000,000,000 (BILLION) and breaks families apart. Sesame Street $400,000,000 ("Fire Big Bird") and helps children to learn. Obama continued to call for specifics of Romney's federal budget cuts, because there are no details....thus far...except cutting Big Bird.
The specifics of how to "eliminate" Big Bird were not forthcoming, but some suggested that Republican Clint Eastwood or Arnold Schwarzenegger might be chosen to knock him off. Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered, but declined because "I have already destroyed the happiness of enough kids this year"...he was rumored to mutter.
BIG BIRD, ONE OF THE 47%?
Big Bird, never active in politics has always been considered a relatively quiet lower middle class bird. He has lived most of his live in a Queens alley in New York. His employer (Public Broadcasting), through Sesame Street was considered a revolution in quality programming to educate and teach two generations of children through creative entertainment. The program reached such popularity that nations throughout the world studied and imitated it. NPR, and Public Broadcasting is supported by grants and donations, of which about 17% comes from the U.S. Government, the balance from donations from individuals and charities.
There has been an ongoing resentment from the conservative right wing, of Public TV, because unlike private broadcasting companies, it is insulated from influences of big business, or political parties and it can not be influenced by large 'big money' advertising. Nor does it accept political funding, thus is non partisan. Tea Party and right wing politicians have been trying to cut it back for years, but the program has influenced so many children, now grown up people, that voters overwhelmingly support NPR and Public Broadcasting. Now for the first time in a political race, BIG BIRD, symbolizes a difference in the political direction of the country.
If you wish to do something, support Big Bird. How? Make a sign or a card, or have your kids make a sign and put it in the window of your car. "I love Big Bird"....or "I support Big Bird". Teach your kids something about politics in America.
